History of Scaffolding, as we all know dates way back to prehistoric times

A History of Scaffolding – Past Era

Did you know that scaffolding dates back to prehistoric times, due to holes still existing in the walls of Palaeolithic caves in France. The caves are home to famous wall paintings, which was created by the primitive occupants over 17,000 years ago.

There is strong evidence that Egyptian Pharaohs used wooden scaffolding for buildings associated with the pyramids. Later in Medieval times, scaffolding was used to construct abbeys and churches by the Monks who worked there.

However, before the introduction of the metal tubes that we use today, scaffolding was built from wooden branches or bamboo. The practice of using Bamboo tied together with string is actually still heavily used in China today, as it’s considered cheaper and less likely to cause serious harm if they fall or get damaged.

In the early 1900’s when the Grandfather of Scaffolding, Daniel Palmer-Jones were involved in the construction trade, they realised that metal poles was more reliable than wooden poles, as they had a tendency to slip when tied together with ropes.

A History of Scaffolding Safety

Safety has always been a priority for scaffolders, but apparently not always for employers. In the early years following WW2, men were recruited to work on building sites where unskilled labourers ‘cut their teeth’ as rookie scaffold workers.
