From Monday 10th May 2021 and throughout the rest of week, the UK will be supporting ‘Mental Health Week’ to help stop the rates of Suicide in men and women from raising. Of course, despite the benefits in the scaffolding industry, such as high work satisfaction and great team spirit, many scaffolding professionals can suffer from stress, depression, and anxiety.
How to deal with stress in the workplace starts with a healthy environment and ensuring that mental health and stress are discussed openly. In fact, workers should be made aware that support is available to them, and that they can come and discuss any stress or mental health problems. This is to build a supportive work environment which is guaranteed to protect workers against stress and burnout.
Ricki Grenfell, owner of RG Scaffolding has made it clear that good management should care more about the mental health of their workers. Managers need to learn how to spot stress, burnout, and unhappiness in their employees. Early warning signs could include the following: Showing up late to work, isolation from a group, forgetfulness, lack of concentration, and irritation or in a negative mood.
If stress is not maintained, it can easily spiral into depression – especially for workers who are prone to this common mental health condition. In fact, suffering from depression is twice as often in Men than women, and suicide is the leading cause of death in Men aged under 50. This suggests that a majority of male employees are struggling to cope and are suffering in silence due to the social pressures and stigma surrounding the discussion of mental health problems among men.
