While all of his masterwork conveys his undeniable talent, his world-famous fresco on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel stands out from the rest.

"Michelangelo created a special type of scaffolding"

Painted for the Pope at the Vatican City, the busy yet beautifully balanced composition depicts a range of religious iconography rendered in Michelangelo’s distinctive style, making it one of the most important and precious masterpieces in the world.

In order to reach the chapel’s incredibly high ceiling, Michelangelo created a special type of scaffolding. He installed wooden platforms held up by brackets inserted into the walls of the chapel, this is the first modern take on Platform Gantries that we use today.

Once the scaffold was installed, he was able to begin the painting process. As he completed the painting in stages, the scaffolding was designed to be moved across the chapel.
