Did you know Scaffolders earn more than architects? Says RG Scaffolder owner, Ricki Grenfell. The annual average salary of a scaffolder is now more than £40,942, whereas that of a university-trained architect is just £38,228. In fact, tradespeople, such as plasterers, bricklayers, plumbers and electricians are all taking home more in pay a year than architects now.
It’s not just the architects either, other professionals, such as teachers, veterinarians, nurses, and accountants earn less than the average tradesperson. It was reported that in Birmingham the highest reported annual salary for a bricklayer was £90,000 a year.
With these findings, this is more likely to urge more young people to enter the construction industry and start a career from a paid apprenticeship rather than rack up in debt by getting a degree.
Construction companies across the UK were asked what they pay their tradespeople, and the results showed this response. The average tradesperson such as, a site manager earns £51,266 over a pharmacist who earns £42,252 a year. Scaffolders will earn £40,942 a year while midwives will earn less than £36,188.
The average university graduate in England earns £32,000 a year whereas our latest research shows that your average bricky or roofer is earning £42,000 a year across the UK. In Birmingham, a scaffolder is commanding wages of up to £90,000 a year.
Pursuing a career in construction is therefore becoming an increasingly savvy move. University students in England will graduate with an average £50,800 of debt, according to RG Scaffolding-Solihull in Warwickshire, while apprentices pass the finish line completely debt-free.
Tradespeople in apprenticeships will earn while they learn, taking home around £17,000 a year. We are therefore calling on all parents, teachers and young people, who too-often favour academic education, to give a career in construction serious consideration.
The construction industry is in the middle of a skills crisis, who are in dire need for some more young people, including more women and tradespeople of ethnic minorities to join the trade.
